 WHY WE SHOULD USE NATURAL INGREDIENTS ON OUR SKIN AND HAIR

In a recent video posted on YouTube, there was a debate about the fact that many hair and skin products manufactured for black people contain dangerous chemicals that in one way or the other affect our life. We are therefore cautioned about the products we use. But how can we do that seeing the myriad of products targeted at black women? With the rise of the natural hair movement and many returning to their natural hair, older brands who were manufacturing cream relaxers do not want to lose and have to devise new marketing strategies to get us to buy their products. Some of the classical brands we know, claim that they are using natural ingredients in their hair products. On the other hand, products that are manufactured with 99% natural ingredients are almost unaffordable.

Have you ever taken a pause to read the ingredients list? Well you may say does it matter? I asked myself the same question in the beginning of my journey. But with the many allergic reactions I got from using some hair products, I am now more than careful. Besides many ‘naturalistas’ are turning to homemade recipes to maintain a healthy skin and hair and to ensure that the ingredients in the products they are buying to do not contain ingredients that are hard to pronounce. You may then ask: What if I don’t have the time and money to make my own products? Fear not! Because we created OdoLiv just for you!

Many of these ingredients are also found in store-bought products and have multiple functions. So, let us look at some of these ingredients that work miracle on our hair and skin.

Aloe Vera: This plant can be made in juice or gel and has antibacterial properties. The juice or gel can be applied to the skin and lightens dark spots caused by dark pigmentation. Aloe vera gel is a good alternative to store-bought gels which contain too many chemicals and easily dry your hair. You can use aloe vera juice to moisturize your hair and aid in hair growth.

Avocado: contains vitamin B and E and is a rich source of protein. You can make a deep conditioner with avocado to strengthen and nourish your hair. The oil from avocado can be used to moisturize the skin and helps in hair growth and thickness. It also protects your hair from natural elements.

Banana: this super fruit contains many vitamins such as biotin, vitamin B6, vitamin C which have great benefits on your skin and hair. A homemade deep conditioner with banana will not only smell good but will surely be a nourishment for your hair. Please don’t be tempted to eat the mixture!

Coconut milk: is rich in proteins and can be used to strengthen hair. It also has antibacterial properties to help treat dandruff and itchy scalp and is also a great natural detangler. If your hair is dry and matted, spray it with some coconut milk, finger detangle or detangle with a wide-tooth comb and you are good to go!

Coconut oil: We cannot overemphasize the benefits of coconut oil on the hair and skin. It treats various skin ailments such as eczema and psoriasis, helps in slowing down the aging process because it contains antioxidants. To detangle your hair before shampooing, apply some coconut oil on your hair and comb it. For some people, coconut oil can feel a bit rough on the hair so it is best advised to mix with other oils before use.

Cocoa butter: has important health benefits for skin and hair as it helps reduce hair loss and prevent the onset of baldness in men. It also reduces wrinkles, stretch marks, skin inflammation as well as the appearance of scars and helps improve overall skin health.

Coffee: contains caffeine as well as antioxidants which help prevent anti-ageing, tighten the skin. Some store-bought night creams contain coffee because it helps in reducing wrinkles and puffy eyes. A homemade coffee scrub is the best way to invigorate the skin. You can use coffee as a natural hair dye or as a rinse. It can also be infused in an oil and applied the hair to promote hair growth and strengthen the strands of your hair.

Egg: Eggs are a great source of protein and can be mixed with other ingredients such as avocado, butters and oils to make a hair mask. Protein helps to strengthen your hair, retain moisture, stop and prevent breakage and the big plus is that it makes your hair softer!

Ginger: helps prevent dandruff and get rid of itchy scalp. It promotes hair growth as well. Henna: can be used as a natural hair dye and it is a good alternative to store-bought dyes which contain ammonia and other chemicals that can dry your hair out and lead to breakage.

Honey: Raw honey can be blended with many ingredients to make hair and facial masks. It provides your hair especially with long lasting moisture. It has anti-bacterial as well as soothing and moisturizing properties. Honey helps to get rid of acne, scars, eczema, dark circles, wrinkles and other signs of aging. It also prevents razor bumps that are caused by shaving.

Lemon: helps to get rid of dark spots, clear blemishes and even skin tone and fade pigmentation. If you have dandruff, lemon juice is your solution, mix half a lemon in a bowl with coconut oil or olive oil, apply the mixture on your hair and leave it for 30 minutes and wash it off with a mild shampoo.

Mayonnaise: You are surprised right? Mayonnaise is made up of egg and oil, therefore it contains both protein from eggs and moisture from the oil. If you are looking for a homemade protein treatment to strengthen your hair, mayonnaise is what you need.

Moringa: can be found in a form of a powder, tea and oil. The powder can be used to stimulate hair growth, prevent wrinkles, slow down premature aging of the skin. Cold pressed moringa oil can be used as a scalp moisturizer. It helps fight dandruff and split ends. Regular use of moringa oil makes your hair stronger.

Olive oil: or extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) also known as the “golden oil”, is an amazing skin and hair moisturizer. It keeps your skin luscious, nourished and your hair shiny.

Rice: What, rice? Yes, rice can be used on your hair. Many naturals are using rice water in their hair to reduce breakage and increase elasticity. Shea butter: It protects the skin against free radicals, calms irritated skin, restores skin elasticity. It is also a natural hair conditioner and moisturizer. If you want to define your curls and coils, raw shea butter will definitely do the job. I have tried it a couple of times and the definition was amaaaaazing!

Tea: Just like coffee, teas contain caffeine and antioxidants. Black tea and green tea both contain the hormone DHT responsible for shedding and hair loss. For example, black tea can be used as a natural hair dye (it helps to cover grey hair) and to reduce shedding. The caffeine in black tea thickens and strengthen hair. Green tea can be used to stimulate hair growth, prevent dandruff and psoriasis. You can do a tea rinse with these teas depending on your problem area. Black tea is high in caffeine and can stiffen your hair after a tea rinse therefore, it is advisable to use a conditioner to balance the moisture.

Yoghurt: especially plain yoghurt contains protein. Not only is it good for you stomach but it has the added benefits for your skin and hair. Yoghurt has anti-fungal properties. It prevents frizzy hair, promotes healthy hair growth, prevents split ends, nourishes and condition the hair and for those who experience dry hair, it is the deal! Yoghurt can be mixed with many ingredients such as lemon, honey, aloe vera, eggs, banana, olive oil, avocado, coconut milk, henna and so on for hair and facial masks.
