My hair is dry, dry, dry no matter what I do! I can’t deal with this anymore! Does this complaint sound familiar to you? Well, let me tell you that you are not alone! In the beginning of my natural hair journey, my hair was always dry even after using tons of products, leaving me frustrated and hopeless. After reading many articles on taking care of dry hair, I decided to take some actions. Let me share with you some recommendations from experts and my routine on how to keep your hair moisturized and nourished to prevent it from drying out all the time.

1. Pre-poo (pre-shampoo) or hot oil treatment: Pre-pooing natural hair or applying a hot oil treatment is applying a conditioning treatment before shampooing so as to add moisture and protect the hair dryness. You can use a mix of ingredients such as natural oils (olive oil, baobab oil, coconut oil) and moisturizing conditioners. A pre-poo or hot oil treatment helps with detangling and moisture retention before cleansing.

2. Shampoo your hair using moisturizing shampoos that are sulfate-free as sulfates dry your hair leading to breakage. Make it a point to read the ingredients list on your shampoo bottle to avoid those that contain sulfates. Once a month you may want to use a clarifying shampoo to give your hair a clean start.

3. Co-washing is another alternative for those who do not shampoo their hair weekly of or do not feel the need to do so often. It is done by using a cleansing conditioner that does not strip your hair of its natural oils and is gentler on your hair as compared to a shampoo.

4. Deep conditioning your hair often (at least once a week) will your hair retain moisture and promote hair growth.

5. Moisturize your hair often by using water-based products. Applying the LOC or LCO method is another step to keep your hair moisturized. The L stands for Liquid or leave-in conditioner, O is for oils and C is for cream. When you moisturize your hair, you want to start by using water or a leave-in conditioner that is water-based, next you apply a natural oil to retain that moisture and seal it with a cream or butter-based product such as raw shea butter or whipped shea butter

6. Doing an oil rinse helps to detangle hair and keep single strands knots at bay. It also increases moisture and soften the hair. After shampooing your hair, apply some oil on your hair, leave it on for 3-5 minutes then rinse it out with cool water and apply your favorite rinse out conditioner. Oil rinse keeps your hair extremely soft, shiny and frizz free.

7. Stretch your natural hair with twists, braids, African threading or put your hair in a bun. This way the hair is less prone to tangle and breakage. To know more about African threading (click here).

8. Keep your hair from drying out by using a satin bonnet or satin scarf to prevent moisture loss when you sleep.

9. Keep your hair moisturized by doing the baggy method. Read more about the baggy method here

10. And finally, avoid using products that contain alcohol on your hair as this dries the hair and lead to breakage.

Let me share with you a tip on how I avoid dry natural hair. At the beginning of my hair journey, my hair was always dry even after using the LOC method on wash day. So, I decided to moisturize my hair every day for two weeks in order to achieve a hydration level. Now I moisturize my hair every 2-3 days.

Below are my two recipes for fighting dry hair

Pre-poo recipe

1tbsp olive oil or baobab oil

1tbsp coconut oil 1tbsp hemp seed oil (optional)

2 tbsp honey

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Divide your hair into sections and apply the mixture to each section making sure that your finger detangle your hair to remove the knots. Wear a deep conditioning cap and leave it on for 30-45 min and then shampoo your hair. For thicker hair, you can increase the number of tablespoons to your suitability.

Moisturizing spritz for dry hair

2tbsp of aloe vera juice or aloe vera gel

¼ cup (4tbsp) of water

1tbsp of your baobab oil

1tbsp of coconut oil 5 drops of tea tree oil or peppermint oil

Mix all the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake very well. Spray your hair with this mixture every evening before going to bed or whenever your hair feels dry and seal it with an oil.

See your hair as the solution, not the problem!
