SIX (6) TRUTHS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT NATURAL HAIR GROWTH

In this article, we will discuss truths about the growth, health and loss of natural hair.  We will address issues about natural hair growth that are often time not discussed or addressed by our dearest and beloved social media influencers.

Finding ways to grow our natural hair is a daily concern for natural hair enthusiast like myself.  I have too often a time followed blogs, vlogers and articles that promise; How to grow 6 inches of natural hair in 3 months. How to reach waist length quickly by doing A or B. 13 ways to make your hair grow faster and longer etc.

Does this sound familiar to you?

I desperately tried all these until I came across these truths, and they have made me more confident about my natural hair and has totally reduced my expenditure on natural hair products that promised hair growth and health. In this article I try to share some of the truths I have learnt about my natural hair. Join me on this journey as we learn together and feel free to comment and share your ideas with the rest of us, as we embark on this journey together.

# Truth 1

Attaining a healthy long natural hair is not a myth, but the truth is, there is no fast recipe to having long natural hair. As humans as our body goes through changes, so does our hair. Having been natural for some years, I must deal with issues that affect my natural hair growth daily. Not because I am not taking care of my natural hair properly, but because my natural hair goes through periodic cycles.

# Truth 2

Genetic factors have a profound effect on the density, texture, color and length of your hair. Hereditary factors can affect the way your hair grows.  All hair follicles are formed during fetal development. Hair is generated in the hair follicle by continually undergoing phases of decline, rest, and growth throughout our life. The length of the hair is determined by the duration of the growth phase; for example, the growth phase for scalp hair can proceed for a number of years, while the growth phase for eyebrows last only a few months. After the growth phase, hair formation ceases, and the follicle recedes and enters a period of rest. After a period of rest, a new growth period starts, and the old hair is ejected and lost from the body. So  don’t panic, when you notice these changes, if you don’t have an existing hair condition.

# Truth 3

Hair loss due to postpartum. Some hair loss is natural during the period of postpartum, and most women will experience this after childbirth. During pregnancy, the increase in estrogen levels contribute to the hair gaining more volume. After the arrival of the baby, the change in hormone levels causes hair to fall out. This type of hair loss is called post-partum hair loss and can last few months. Generally, there is no need to worry as this problem will disappear by itself within 3-5 months.

# Truth 4

Hair loss due to hormonal imbalance. One of the first signs of hormonal imbalance is hair thinning. Many women who have reached menopausal age and beyond will experience hormonal imbalance which will cause changes in the body and these changes can affect the health and growth of natural hair. Also, stress, pregnancy, underactive thyroid and Polycystic ovary syndrome can lead to hormonal imbalance which can cause hair loss. However, there are natural ways to balance your hormones.

# Truth  5

Hair loss due to alopecia. There are different types of alopecia, but my main focus will be on alopecia areata.  This condition occurs when hair starts falling off in small patches which is as a result of your immune system attacking hair follicles. The choice of protective hair styles can also contribute to speeding this process. The constant wear and tear from braids, weaves, wigs or constantly wearing tight protective styles can affect our edges and hair in general. If nothing is done, this condition can become permanent and the only solution will be hair transplant. Currently there is no cure, however, all hope is not lost, nurturing our natural hair in a proper way and having patience can go a long way to help.

# Truth 6

Hair loss due to lack of vitamins and minerals. A lot of people have vitamin and mineral deficiencies with little or knowledge about it. The lack of knowledge about it makes it difficult to establish a correlation between stunted hair growth and the deficiency. Iron deficiency anemia can cause male and female pattern baldness as well as a receding hairline.

Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency, can affect your hair causing thinning hair and hair loss. As someone who is experience this type of hair loss, it can be extremely frustrating. Vitamin D deficiency also contributes to hair loss. People with darker skin living in countries where winter period last for 6 months and more are particularly affected. They have low vitamin D because their skin acts as a natural sunscreen which blocks the body’s ability to absorb natural vitamin D from the sun.  Consult your physician if you suspect any form of vitamin or mineral deficiency. Don’t assume that the problem will be solved by itself or don’t be tempted to take hair vitamins without looking at the root cause of the problem.

The Way Deal with The Above Issues Is Simple!!!!
